5 Tips for Reducing your Plastic Waste

Hi everyone

I know a lot of people are currently trying to reduce their plastic waste.  If not then this may inspire you to start doing so.  I am sharing a few of my current favourite plastic waste reduction products.  I hope you find some of these tips useful.

1.      Fresh Produce Bags – We all rock up to the supermarket with our shopping bags and proceed to put fresh fruit and veg into plastic bags.  I am sure in time that supermarkets will either charge for these bags or phase them out.  I have recently discovered re-useable mesh fresh produce bags.  They can be washed after use and have a tag n the side for you stick the price sticker on after weighing the produce.  The ones I use are Carrinet Veggio Netting Bags.

2.      Food Shopping Bags – Speaking of shopping bags, I love the Trolley Bags, they are so simple to pop in the trolley, un stick the Velcro and roll them down the trolley.  They all sit patiently and wait to be filled.  I do a weekly shop for 2 of us and find the Trolley Bags Express to be the perfect size.  If there are more than 2 of you then you may wish to consider the full size Trolley Bags instead.

3.      Sandwich Bags – For those that take a packed lunch to work, school or college, I introduce to you the reusable sandwich bag.  They have a push closing and once fully closed are airtight to keep your sandwiches fresh.  After use all you need to do is wash them out or pop them in the dishwasher and they are ready to be used time and time again.  No need to buy plastic sandwich bags, cling film or tin foil to transport those sarnies.

4.      Hand Wash – If like me you find you are always purchasing plastic bottles of hand wash, you may like to give hand wash refills a try, such as Ecover hand was refill.  1 pouch fills 2 standard size bottles.  You may also wish to purchase a porcelain soap dispenser and just refill that in the future.

5.      Collapsible Travel Mug – If can be annoying to carry around a bulky travel mug with you when out and about.  So my tip would be to get a collapsible travel mug that you just keep in your bag.  You just never know when a caffeine hit may be required.  The takeaway mugs that coffee shops provide are not widely recyclable as they are made are cardboard AND plastic and require a special separating process before they can be recycled. You will also save yourself around 25p on the drink (depending on the retailer) so the mug will pay for itself over time.

In saving plastic you are often also saving yourself money in the long run so it is a win - win!  I am by no means perfect but I am trying to make small changes where possible to reduce the plastic consumption in my household.

Reduce - Reuse - Recycle
